Jobs to do in March...

Once spring arrives, it is time to get to work.  Careful forehought now will save time and effort later- and give way to a successful year.

  • Spread  manure around the base of fruit bushes and mulch the base of trees.

  • Treat fruit trees before they blossom with a biological pesticide such as Bordeaux mixture.

  • Prune blackcurrent and gooseberry bushes hard.

  • Prepare vegetable beds for sowing and planting.

  • Sow hardy vegetables and herbs in early beds. Chit (sprout) seed potatoes indoors.

  • Check your garden shed carefully (you may find wildlife such as bats or dormice still in hibernation) they should be left undisturbed.

  • Check pots, paths and paved areas for frost damage and repair where necessary.

  • If you have not already done so clean and service all garden equipment.

  • Check your irrigation system if you have one.
